5th Book: Added July 22, 2006SUBJECT: DRAWING WITH PEN & INK
The Pen & Ink Book: You can find this book for sale on the Watson-Guptill site. The price is $19.95. I just checked (July 22, 2006) and right now there are various sellers at half.ebay.com selling this book, though most have prices close to the publisher's price - but there is one copy there today for $8.00. The availability and price range of books on that site changes all the time, but if you find a book there like the one you want, it will no doubt be cheaper there than the full price. They tell you the condition of the book. The books cost less to ship than regular packages. MY COMMENTS ON THIS BOOK I love ink drawings, and in fact Rembrandt's ink drawings are my favorite art to look at, period. I have always wished I could draw with ink, and I'm just starting to learn how. People have sent me books on the subject since I began in earnest, and this one, The Pen & Ink Book, is my favorite even though I really do like the other ones a lot and have learned from them (and will continue to learn from them). I like this book because it's chock full of things that I'll never learn all of as the human life span is only so long! My favorite books are the ones which, no matter their physical size, have endless things to learn in them (and are worth the trouble of learning), so that every time you go back to them, there's something new to think about. The book is very thorough and well-written, by someone who seems quite knowledgeable and thoughtful, as well as quite talented. I very much admire the author's own ink drawings; he has a very unique style. He treats his subjects in unusual ways, and always seemingly very thoughtfully and carefully, with great sensitivity. The book is filled with facts, ideas, and suggestions about how to think in new ways about subjects and materials. It's fun to read and to look at the pictures, and it's inspiring - That's the best part. It makes you want to get going yourself.
The book is divided into three main sections:
MATERIALS AND TOOLS He does not treat anything lightly. As I mentioned, he is very thorough. I certainly recommend this one for people who are ready to take pen and ink drawing seriously. Forget those other books if you must choose just one. If you want to see what an exciting artist Jos. A. Smith is, take a look at his blog: Jos. A. Smith. - Jean
