When I chose the mugshot photos to draw, I chose those where the subjects had an appearance that confirmed, contradicted, or just added another dimension to, their "criminal" histories. It seems that many of the "professional" criminals, such as Mafia gang members, had an appearance that contradicted their ruthless activities; that is very interesting, and I can imagine reasons for this. Robert Stroud, though, was not a gang member, and not even considered by many to be a bad person; rather he was a normal person who found himself (very infrequently) in some personal circumstances that brought out strong emotions that caused him to do things he otherwise would never have considered or condoned. And so one would expect that he would look neither ruthless nor exceptionally innocent. In fact, to me his appearance in the mugshots I drew from seemed to show a thoughtful, intelligent, kind person. Did I read these things into his appearance because I knew about him? Possibly, yet I don't see anything in those mugshots that indicates a threatening or obtuse personality - quite the opposite. |
