| Alphonse Gabriel Capone (Jan. 17, 1899 - Jan. 25, 1947), also known as Al Capone or just "Scarface." Gangster, murderer. Active in the 1920s and 30s. Believed to be responsible for the Valentine's Day Massacre. In spite of his ruthless, murderous, life of crime he was beloved by many people of low income because of his help to the needy (especially Italian-Americans) and also due to his making liquor available during the Prohibition. In these mug shots he looks baby-faced, prosperous, and friendly. Needless to say, his looks belied reality. However, in later mug shots he looked quite different - not more murderous but plain, homely, and broken down. |
